For example, we think competitive, confident, assertive, decisive or independent. We rarely hear leadership characteristics like empathy, relationship-oriented, strong communicator, collaborative or supportive. Both men and women associate leadership traits with behaviors believed to be more common or appropriate in men.

The problem is that leadership qualities are the same as those used to describe males because the socialization process has produced the expectation that male social qualities also happen to be leadership qualities. Therefore, the belief is that when women are in leadership positions, they should demonstrate agentic qualities, fulfilling the expectations that leaders are assertive, competent and dominant.

The rub is that agentic behavior is viewed as less desirable in women, creating the classic double standard that favors men. The cross-pressure of communal qualities people prefer in women and agentic qualities people prefer in leaders puts a tremendous burden on female leaders who are trying to find a leadership style that works for them.

First, change how you envision a leader. We need to broaden our definition of what makes a good leader. Can they be socially responsible, supportive or a great collaborator? People are strong in all different EQ traits, and the good news is that you can raise the level of your overall emotional intelligence with just a little bit of focus and effort. Unlike personality or IQ, the EQ for men and women can improve with age -- and hopefully it does.

In many studies, men are both physically and verbally more aggressive than women, with medium effect sizes. Agreeableness and aggressiveness are the most significantly different personality traits.

Other than these two, men tend to be a little less conscientious, a little less dependable, and a little less responsible than women. Women, on the other hand, are only a little more emotional than men, with a small effect size. In terms of psychological well-being, men and women are almost equally happy and satisfied with their lives. Scientists used to believe that many differences between men and women were inborn, but research eventually showed otherwise.

Culture, socialization, and learning play an enormous role in how boys and girls behave. Thus, scientists turned to the opposite side and claimed that most differences between men and women are rooted in cultural and social factors. The counterexample of this theory was how all mammals have inborn differences between males and females. For example, in the case of aggression, all the male mammals are more aggressive.

Testosterone has an important biological role in aggression, but families and societies also tend to raise boys to be more aggressive. Research and meta-analysis show that women are not particularly better than men in verbal skills, and men are not that much better in math. After meta-analyses of 40 studies, the effect size of verbal skills was slightly above zero, while math was a more complicated situation. Men scored slightly above women on math problem solving, but women scored slightly higher than men on math computations.

Overall, the differences were very small. One area where men had higher scores than women, with medium effect sizes, was spatial tasks. Men can mentally rotate objects better and imagine what they would look like from other angles. Overall, the mental differences are not as significant as most people expect, while physical differences were more in line with common beliefs. Men and women differ in muscle mass, and men are usually physically stronger and can throw things farther than women can.

Math is a complicated issue. They rather think what next to do about a situation they are in. Example, if one has lost his job he is unlikely to sit crying over it and give others an impression that he feels sorry for himself in that situation. A man usually thinks what next can be done, how to rectify it. He would explore more about himself, his capabilities and make sure he secures himself with a better job.
