He was hoping the DG Turandot recording would be used as a soundtrack for a film of the opera he was planning to undertake at the Forbidden City in the event, the Chinese preferred the lure of Hollywood and granted access to the film-makers of The Last Emperor instead.

I think Karajan was as fascinated as to how Ricciarelli would have looked as The Icy Princess, possibly more so than how she sounded. I would argue in this respect, she would have been slightly better than La Nilsson stupendous though she is — sonically anyway! With best regards.
